Vision of the Future

31 03 2007

I have been expecting OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) to come along pretty soon to make OLED walls for instance where the whole wall is a “screen”. They are in phones and on shirts now. But I just had a vision with the help of the Focuso work I have been doing…

In naming a series of Focuso pictures I imagined them as everyday objects but with OLED on them to make them glow and seem interesting. Now, OLED will bring us information too but it can be just used as a light – and will probably replace our lights at least general room and space lighting lights in the next five years.

In naming or associating or connecting, I am inventing – it kind of came by accident initially – but by watching out for invention… I realized, hey – cool!

So.. you can see the pictures with their titles and see if you too have a vision. I am running the contest too – the pictures can be seen in part here and eventually in full here:

But the vision is more important than the contest – please come and visit.

And, take the TAPOLL predict-a-poll on the issue to see what area you think OLED will affect most (just the expected locations here) – it is posted on the Tapoll Tech Blog:

When I hear about the OLED lights being developed I don’t think about these abstract things you’ve mentions like Shirts, Wall and Ceilling lights…I think about the 2 most used and focused on lights in North America. Imagine our T.V.s and Computer Screens using OLED style lighting imagine hanging your 50 inch television on the wall like an olden times tapestry and a screen saver is the peice of wall art right next to your Mona Lisa print. Time to upgrade your style? Just change the screen savers around your house and it’s a whole new home. Amidst all this rabble I’m spouting I just realized…televisions and monitors, who’ll need them with those walls!? just get the back end stuff from Microsoft Surface and you’ve got the home of tomorrow (assuming Microsoft doesn’t pull another ‘ME’ )

Bang! Pretty cool things! I love visual arts, I can’t imagine my life without my eyes I mean, music is awesome, but aren’t these things visual overtures? I think they do… Bravo to Dan Zen and Focuso!

the last time i checked the only thing that’s holding OLEDs back is the fact that the “light” dies pretty quickly. You would have to buy a TV each year. =S
Is there some cheap OLED out there that one can buy and maybe experiment with?

I am surprised about the media attention for e Ink with the Kindle electronic book, because it is just black and white and lacks dynamics. I’ rather see OLEDs used for that purpose. Think about the newspapers in the Harry Potter movies, where the pictures are actually moving. What about books with several pages each with a combination of text and moving pictures, maybe with added sounds.
